Irfan Ansari’s Remarks on Sita Soren Stir Controversy Before Jharkhand Polls
In the lead-up to the Jharkhand assembly elections, a political storm has erupted over alleged derogatory remarks made by Jharkhand minister Irfan Ansari against BJP leader Sita Soren. The incident reportedly occurred after Ansari filed his nomination for the Jamtara constituency, where Sita Soren is also contesting. Ansari’s comments have ignited outrage across political lines, with leaders condemning the remarks as disrespectful, particularly towards women from the tribal community.
Sita Soren, visibly emotional while recounting the incident, stated, “Mr. Ansari has been targeting me ever since my candidacy for this seat was announced. However, the derogatory remarks he made after filing his nomination are unacceptable and an affront to the women of the tribal community. The tribal community will not forgive him for this.” Soren, the widow of Durga Soren and the eldest son of JMM chief Shibu Soren, joined the BJP after a fallout with her family. She explained that the conflict arose after her brother-in-law, Hemant Soren, resigned from his chief minister position amid legal troubles.
In response to the incident, BJP MP Vivek Thakur, present at Sita Soren’s press conference, expressed solidarity, condemning Ansari’s remarks and pledging that the BJP would stage protests across the state. Thakur’s statement was followed by an announcement from the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes (NCST), which issued a notice to the Jharkhand government seeking a report on Ansari’s comments within three days.
Mahila Congress Chief Alka Lamba publicly denounced Ansari’s remarks, stating, “Such comments have no place in political discourse, regardless of the speaker’s affiliation.” Lamba underscored that Congress supports legal action for offensive remarks and assured that, once a new government is formed, her party would pursue fair action in cases of misconduct against women.
The BJP has since filed a formal complaint with the Election Commission against Ansari, requesting his disqualification from the race. In their complaint, BJP leaders highlighted the derogatory nature of Ansari’s comments, emphasizing their insult to both the tribal community and widows in the state.
The controversy has drawn attention to broader issues within political parties regarding respect for women, with several Congress leaders historically making similar remarks. This pattern of incidents has raised questions about the party’s commitment to women’s empowerment, particularly in light of controversial statements made by prominent Congress figures such as Rahul Gandhi, Digvijaya Singh, and Sheila Dikshit. Observers suggest that while the Congress party often promotes slogans advocating for women’s rights, there remains a disconnect between these messages and the actions of some party leaders.
Capitalizing on the incident, the BJP has targeted Hemant Soren, criticizing his silence on the issue and questioning his commitment to protecting women’s dignity. Party leaders, including Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Himanta Biswa Sarma, have taken strong stances, calling for action and highlighting the need for respectful discourse in politics.
This controversy marks yet another instance where remarks against women have brought attention to the need for reforms in political discourse. Congress, faced with mounting criticism, may have to address this longstanding issue within its ranks to maintain credibility on women’s rights. As the Jharkhand elections approach, how this incident unfolds may significantly impact the parties involved and their appeal to voters.
