Is Bangladesh balancing? After meeting with RAW in India, contact with ISI increased.
Dhaka. Bangladesh’s foreign and defense policies are undergoing rapid changes following the formation of a new government. Under Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s leadership, Dhaka is striving to improve relations with India while also expanding military and strategic ties with Pakistan and Turkey.
‘Secret’ tour of India
Major General Mohammad Qaiser Rashid Chowdhury, head of Bangladesh’s military intelligence agency (DGFI), recently made an unannounced visit to New Delhi. Officially described as a medical trip, he reportedly met with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, Research and Analysis Wing chief Parag Jain, and Director General of Military Intelligence Lieutenant General RS Raman.
Contact with ISI also
Nearly a month after his visit to Delhi, the DGFI chief arrived in Islamabad, where he met with Pakistani military officials and representatives of the Inter-Services Intelligence. It is reported that this was a two-day official visit, during which intelligence cooperation and security issues were discussed.
India-Bangladesh Defence Dialogue
Meanwhile, M. Riaz Hamidullah met with Indian Army Chief Upendra Dwivedi in New Delhi. The two sides discussed defense cooperation, joint training, and regional peace.
Growing partnership with Türkiye
Bangladesh-Turkey military staff talks were held in Dhaka from March 30 to April 2, and agreement was reached to enhance defense cooperation. Dhaka reportedly views Turkey as a key partner in the modernization of the military, particularly in the areas of drones and defense equipment.
Balancing strategy?
Experts believe Bangladesh is attempting a balancing act—engaging in dialogue with India’s security concerns, while keeping its options open by expanding defense cooperation with Pakistan and Turkey. Indian security agencies are currently monitoring this entire activity.
