Is BCCI in a hurry to bring Vaibhav Suryavanshi to Team India?

Vaibhav Suryavanshi is going to enter the Indian T20 team. The T20 squad for the tour of Ireland and England is to be announced on Saturday (June 6). According to media reports, Shreyas Iyer will be made the captain of the T20 team in place of Suryakumar Yadav. Vaibhav will be included in Team India for the first time. The selection committee headed by Ajit Agarkar is going to take this step keeping in mind the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and the T20 World Cup to be held in Australia-New Zealand.

15 year old Vaibhav recently batted brilliantly in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. While playing for Rajasthan Royals, he scored 776 runs in 15 innings at a strike rate of 237.30. He had won awards like Purple, Most Valuable Player and Emerging Playoff of the Season. After this blockbuster performance, now the doors of Team India are going to open for him. He will become the youngest player to be selected in the Indian men’s team after Sachin Tendulkar.

Is BCCI in a hurry regarding Vaibhav?

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has been infamous for a long time that it does not give early opportunities to young players. Only after doing wonders in domestic cricket as well as in IPL, the players found themselves close to the Indian white ball team. Let us take the example of Sarfaraz Khan. He scored runs year after year in Ranji Trophy, only then he got a place in the Indian Test team. But the matter has been different for Vaibhav.

Vaibhav may have created havoc in junior cricket and IPL but he is yet to prove himself in domestic cricket. He has played 8 first class matches so far, in which he has been able to score only 207 runs at an average of 17.25. During this period, only one fifty has come from his bat. His record in List-A is definitely better. This left-handed batsman has scored 353 runs in 8 matches at an average of 44.53, which includes one century innings (190).

Just IPL performance is enough for Vaibhav?

The national selectors have been trying out any player with India-A before including them in the Indian team. Same criteria have been kept for selection in T20 team but Vaibhav is seen standing at the door of Team India only on the basis of his performance in IPL. He broke Andre Russell’s record of scoring the fastest 1000 runs in IPL this season.

Russell took 545 balls to touch the figure of thousand IPL runs. Whereas Vaibhav achieved this milestone in just 440 balls. Last season, he scored 252 runs in 7 innings at a strike rate of 206.55. Now, with his stormy batting this year, he has definitely forced the selectors to consider his name, but it may be too early to include him in Team India.
