News India Live, Digital Desk: Regarding the national anthem ‘Jana Gana Mana’ and the national song ‘Vande Mataram’, people often have a question in their mind whether the protocols are the same for both? Recently, the Central Government has clarified the position in the Parliament regarding the honor of ‘Vande Mataram’ and the rules related to it. It is important for every Indian to know this information given by the Home Ministry.

What do the official rules say?

The government has clarified that it is the fundamental duty of every citizen to respect the national anthem and the national flag under Article 51A (a) of the Constitution of India. However, no special legal obligation (penal provisions) for standing like ‘Jana Gana Mana’ for ‘Vande Mataram’ i.e. the national anthem has been implemented yet.

National Anthem vs National Anthem: What’s the difference?

According to the Home Ministry, there is a set time limit (52 seconds) and special code of conduct for the national anthem. But there are no written rules for the national anthem ‘Vande Mataram’ which mandates singing it or forcing one to stand during it.

Government’s stance: “Equal status, but different rules”

Many times such petitions have been filed in the courts in which there has been a demand to give the national song equal status as the national anthem. The Government believes that ‘Vande Mataram’ is a historical symbol of the Indian freedom struggle and holds the highest place in the hearts of Indians. The government also made it clear that it respects people’s sentiments towards the national anthem, but at present there is no proposal to bring any new law to make it mandatory.
