Is PM Narendra Modi’s image being harmed? From Operation Sindoor to American Deal

Has PM Narendra Modi’s image been damaged in the last one year? In Operation Sindoor, Pakistan has to be attacked and retreated within three days or Donald Trump has to announce ceasefire. Apart from this, PM Modi has maintained silence on the US-Israeli attack on Iran. At the same time, PM Modi has not given any public statement on the matter of buying less oil from Russia in the trade deal with America or forcibly buying oil from Venezuela.

Narendra Modi, who is vocal on every issue of the country and abroad, is silent this time on issues related to India. The opposition is continuously raising questions on this silence of PM Modi. People are raising questions on social media that these developments are damaging the image of PM Narendra Modi. What is its truth? Let us know…

Narendra Modi and his image

In fact, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has remained the pivot of Indian politics since 2014. Wherever he stands, victory is achieved there. This has been seen in most of the elections from 2014 to 2025. Under his leadership, BJP has been able to capture power in the country for three consecutive times. This is a historic victory for any non-Congress party. It is the wonder of PM Modi’s name and image that there are many states in the country where BJP was successful in forming the government for the first time or the party became stronger in the states than before. In view of the victory in the elections, many political analysts have named it ‘Brand Modi’.

‘Brand Modi’ i.e. was considered a guarantee of victory in Lok Sabha, Assembly and local elections. Brand Modi became stronger as BJP kept winning election after election. This is the reason why the BJP party, its leaders and Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself are conscious about their image. The party knows that damage to the PM’s image means BJP will suffer losses in the elections.

To assess the impact on the image of Prime Minister Narendra Modi after Operation Sindoor and the trade agreement with America, it is important to first understand these two incidents. After this, the loss/gain to the PM’s image can be evaluated on the basis of opinion polls, media reports and social media sentiment.

What was Operation Sindoor?

Pakistan-backed terrorists carried out a deadly attack in Baisan Valley of Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir. 26 Indian citizens were killed in this terrorist attack. The pictures from the incident shocked the entire nation and filled it with anger. The demand for teaching Pakistan a lesson started rising rapidly on the streets, squares, media and social media. This time the entire opposition also demanded the government to teach Pakistan a lesson. Amidst these demands, Prime Minister Modi held a high level meeting with Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, the National Security Advisor, CDS and the three armies.

After several rounds of meetings, the Indian Air Force launched an open attack on 9 terrorist hideouts in Pakistan in response to the Pahalgam terrorist attack on the night of May 7, 2025. In the Indian military action, terrorist camps were destroyed by precise attacks on 9 terror camps and terrorists were also killed in this action. Pakistan also retaliated against India. Missiles were fired from both sides, defense systems were used. But, on the evening of May 10, US President Donald Trump suddenly announced a ceasefire in the ongoing war between India and Pakistan. After Trump’s announcement the attacks from both sides stopped.

Claims and declaration

But, on the other hand, Modi government said that the decision not to attack Pakistan from India was taken after DGMO level talks. Along with the opposition, common people started raising questions that why did the government listen to a third country to stop Operation Sindoor? Donald Trump kept giving repeated statements that he had stopped the war between India and Pakistan by threatening trade. After the sudden ceasefire, US President Trump took all the credit. After this there was a dispute. The opposition called it a failure of India’s foreign policy and questioned the lack of transparency.

The opposition also alleged that PM Modi stopped bombing Pakistan under pressure from Trump. On social media, this incident was described as an attempt to increase the declining popularity of PM Modi, after this incident BJP registered a historic victory in the Bihar Assembly elections.

What was the trade deal with America?

Last month, on February 2, 2026, President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced an interim trade agreement. America reduced tariff on Indian goods from 50% to 18%. In return, India reduced its purchase of Russian oil. Also made a mandatory agreement to do annual trade of 500 billion dollars with America. PM Modi described this step as one that will create new jobs in India and a big victory for the MSME sector. But the opposition said that this weakened India’s sovereignty because giving up dependence on Russian oil seems a compulsion.

Later, Donald Trump’s office ‘The White House’ issued a press note with the specific terms of this agreement. In this press note, Trump said that with the trade deal with India, America will get an open market like India with a population of 140 crores. America said that India will eliminate or reduce tariffs on all American industrial goods and many types of American food and agricultural goods. The opposition here also alleged that PM Modi has made an agreement with America to make this deal. Also said that the deal will have a negative impact on Indian farmers.

Name appeared in controversial cases

After this agreement, Congress and its leader Rahul Gandhi are repeatedly alleging that PM Modi has adopted a compromise approach with America. Apart from this, in some reports, PM Modi’s name has appeared in the controversial Epstein file, which may affect PM Modi’s image. PM Modi did not make any statement after the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in the joint attack on Iran by Israel and America, and the sinking of an Iranian ship in the Indian Ocean by America. Even after this, questions are being raised on the silence of the PM.

How much damage to Modi’s image?

Amidst all this, in January this year, India Today conducted a poll on Prime Minister Narendra Modi. According to this poll, 54.7 percent people considered PM Modi suitable for the next Prime Minister of the country. In the same poll, 57 percent people believed that Modi’s performance as Prime Minister is good. But, in the same poll, 46 percent said that India’s relations with Pakistan have not improved and PM Modi failed to counter Donald Trump’s claim on Operation Sindoor. In the same poll, 29 percent people believed that Donald Trump put pressure on India regarding the trade deal.
