Is Shohei Ohtani the GOAT? Dodgers star wins 4th AP Athlete of the Year award
In a historic finish to an unforgettable 2025, baseball superstar Shohei Ohtani has been named the Associated Press Male Athlete of the Year.
This marks Ohtani’s fourth time receiving the prestigious award officially tying him with icons Tiger Woods, LeBron James and Lance Armstrong for the most wins by a male athlete in the award’s 94-year history.
The Los Angeles Dodgers phenom dominated the 2025 season leading his team to a second consecutive World Series title.
Ohtani achieved what many thought impossible by returning to “two-way” dominance after major surgery, hitting 55 home runs while maintaining a brilliant 2.87 ERA on the pitcher’s mound.
Reflecting on the historic achievement, Ohtani told the AP through an interpreter that “receiving this award multiple times is something truly special.”
His season was highlighted by a legendary performance in the National League Championship Series, where he struck out ten batters and hit three home runs in a single game.

Ohtani noted that “if you think about it in terms of a single game, I’d say that’s probably true” when asked if it was his best performance ever.
Despite his growing “GOAT” status, he remains humble and hungry, stating, “setting goals high is what I believe is most important,” and added, “I will work hard so that I can win it again next year as well.”
