Kolkata Kolkata: Mohammedan SC broke their five-match losing streak in the league by holding Odisha FC to a goalless draw at the Kishore Bharti Krirangan in the Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 on Friday. Kalinga Warriors dominated 57.6 percent possession but, unlike the home team's two players, did not take a single shot on target. Mohammedan SC and Odisha FC, however, missed eight and five shots respectively, indicating a lack of accuracy early on. As both teams were trying to break free to consolidate their gameplay, Mohammedan SC found their first clear goal opportunity of the game in the seventh minute.
After Alexis Gomez picked up the ball from a set-piece and delivered a cross to Joe Zoharliana in the center of the box, Gomez continued to be at the center of the action, as his presence in the final third was the main reason for creating chances for Mohammedan SC. In the 20th minute, he crossed the ball in the middle of the box for Lalremsanga Fanai, whose shot again lacked accuracy. 15 minutes later Funai again made contact with Gómez, and the latter took a strong touch but hit the ball from distance. Amrinder Singh had to adjust quickly to this effort and save it to keep the score level. Odisha FC were struggling to get a grip on the proceedings, but got a great chance in the 54th minute thanks to Hugo Boumous's free-kick.
The attacking midfielder delivered the ball into the box, which appeared to be directed towards Thoiba Singh, but Mohammed Irshad of Mohammedan SC was first to deliver. Although her header went past Padam Chhetri, the goalkeeper showed quick reflexes to save the ball from going into the net. However, the home team quickly regained control and Gomez went on the offensive again in the 66th minute. He made a quick one-two down the left flank with Bikash running towards the center and hit a powerful shot that hit the crossbar, his closest effort to breaking the deadlock. Seven minutes later, Mohammedan SC probed the Odisha FC backline, with Irshad receiving the ball from a corner and producing a creative cross for Cesar Manzoki, who hit the crossbar from touching distance.
