Mumbai City beat Chennaiyin FC in thrilling contest- Talking points
Nikolaos Karelis’s early goal proved to be the winner as Mumbai City FC registered a narrow 1-0 victory against Chennaiyin FC in a home game at Mumbai Football Arena, Mumbai on Saturday.
With this win, Mumbai City FC has soared to the top four of the league table with 20 points out of 12 games while Chennaiyin’s FC stayed in the ninth position with 15 points in 13 games.
Here are the talking points from the match:
#1 Karelis opens the scoring
Mumbai City scored an early goal in the match when Nikolas Karelis found a loose ball in the penalty box after a wicked deflection from Ryan Edwards and scored it with a brilliant curling finish in the far corner.
This was Mumbai’s first goal of the season in the first 15 minutes of the match.
#2 Lukas Brambilla troubles Mumbai’s defence
The Brazilian midfielder Lukas Brambilla had a very good game as he troubled the Mumbai defense with his dribbling skills, making a lot of in-roads in their backline.
He tied four shots on the goal but could not find the back of the net because of a few good saves from Rehnesh and the blocks of Mehtab and Tiri.
#3 Tiri Proved too strong for Chennaiyin’s attack
The experienced Spanish forward Tiri had a very tough ask today against Chennaiyin as he had to face a lot of threats from strong forwards like Irfan and Chima.
However, he tackled all the questions asked of him in the defense with 16 defensive actions which included five interceptions, four tackles, and three blocks.
#4 Chennaiyin’s inconsistency continues
Chennaiyin FC had a good game against Mumbai City FC. But once again they failed to capitalize on their chances and one unfortunate deflection in the starting minutes cost them three points.
This also resulted in their inconsistent runs in the Indian Super League as they still aren’t able to register two consecutive wins on the trot, which kept them away from the top six of the leaderboard.
What’s next for both teams
Mumbai City will now have a big gap of nine days before their next game against Northeast United FC on 30th December while Chennaiyin will return back to their home for the southern derby match against Bengaluru FC on December 28.
