ISL: Punjab with 10 players stopped FC Goa, 1-1 draw

In the ISL match played at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on Monday, 10-player Punjab FC put up a brilliant fight and held FC Goa to a 1-1 draw. The draw continued Goa’s unbeaten run, but Punjab also gained an important point.

From the beginning of the match, Punjab controlled the ball and attacked from both the wings. Left-back Muhammad Uwais delivered dangerous crosses. In the 15th minute, Danny Ramirez’s header from a corner was caught by Hrithik Tiwari.

Punjab got success in the 27th minute. From midfield, Mangalenthang Kipgen made a brilliant through pass to Nsungusi Junior Effiong. The striker gave the team the lead by scoring a brilliant goal with his left foot.

Ramirez, Effiong and Kipgen missed chances at the end of the first half. Sandesh Jhingan and Pol Moreno brought Goa close to equalizing in stoppage time, but the goal was not scored.

Nsungusi got a red card just three minutes into the second half. Goa equalized in the 53rd minute with a powerful shot by Dejan Drajic from Bryson Fernandes.

Goa applied pressure. Udanta Singh’s header went over, Dragic missed an easy header. Punjab’s Bede Osuji created a chance for Kipgen, but Tiwary saved it.

Yasir’s header was stopped by Arshdeep at the last moment. Rainier Fernandes, Dragic and Brisson missed out. Punjab showed strength in the stoppage. Dragic was named man of the match. Goa is at fourth place with nine points, Punjab at eighth with five points.
