This attack was carried out on Iran’s Bandar Anjali port, which was the main route for the movement of drones, ammunition and military equipment between the two countries.
The Caspian Sea is the world’s largest inland watershed and has long been a safe corridor for Russia-Iran, where the US Navy does not have access. This attack is indicating further increase in the scope of the war.
Bandar Anjali is not only the center of arms supply but also the route for trade of wheat and other essential goods. The attack may also impact these business activities, which may affect regional food security. Russia has strongly condemned this attack and called it an attack on a civilian trade hub. Moscow warned that such action could further spread the war.
Meanwhile, the eyes of the world are fixed on the strategically important sea route Hormuz Strait. Many countries have sought to ensure the safety of merchant ships passing through this route. A large portion of global oil supply passes through this demand. It will be interesting to see what direction the situation will take in the coming period of diplomatic talks along with military preparations.
