Israel has said that he was killed during the attack on Hezbollah's main intelligence headquarters in Beirut about three weeks ago and Hezbollah commander Ali Hussein Hazima was also killed along with him.
Saffieddine was a cousin of former Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah. After Nasrallah was assassinated by Israel in September, Saffieddine was considered the successor. Saffieddin was also a member of the Shura Council, Hezbollah's highest military-political body, responsible for making decisions and setting the group's policies.
