Israeli army claims major action in southern Lebanon, flag hoisted again on Beaufort Fort
New Delhi. Amidst the increasing tension between Israel and Hezbollah, a major development has come to light from Southern Lebanon. The Israeli Army has claimed that it has established control over the strategically important Beaufort Fort and its associated hill. It is being told that after almost 44 years, the Israeli flag has been hoisted again on this historical fort.
According to reports, this mountainous area located near the Nabatieh region of southern Lebanon witnessed fierce clashes and air strikes for several days. The Israeli military says the troops carried out an operation against Hezbollah fighters in inaccessible areas, leading to access to the Beaufort Fortress.
Israel claims that this military action is one of its important strategic achievements since the conflict intensified in early March. The development comes at a time when Israel and Lebanon, which have been formally at war since 1948, are also going through a US-brokered negotiation process.
Avichay Adraee, an Arabic-language spokesman for the Israeli army, shared a photo on social media platform X, showing soldiers surrounding the fort. At the same time, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz claimed that the soldiers have hoisted the Israeli flag on the fort.
Beaufort Fort has been at the center of the Israel-Lebanon conflict in the past. Israeli forces occupied the area in 1982 and maintained a presence there until their withdrawal from southern Lebanon in 2000.
The Israeli military said in its statement that the latest operation is aimed at weakening Hezbollah’s military structure and eliminating potential security threats to Israeli civilians. The Army also indicated that the scope of the operation could be further expanded if needed.
In recent times, Israel has increased its military activities in southern Lebanon. According to reports, the deployment of troops has been extended to the crossing of the Litani River and a warning has also been issued to local residents to move out of some areas. However, these claims await independent confirmation and an official response from the Lebanese side.
