Israeli soldier slams Jesus statue with sledgehammer, igniting outrage in Lebanon
A viral photograph depicting an Israeli soldier smashing the head of a Jesus Christ statue with a sledgehammer in southern Lebanon has triggered widespread condemnation and accusations of desecration of religious sites.
The image, which has amassed over 5 million views on X (formerly Twitter), shows the soldier striking a statue of Jesus on a cross in the Maronite Christian village of Debel, roughly five kilometres from the Israeli border. The incident reportedly occurred during Israeli operations in the area.
On Monday, the Israeli military confirmed the authenticity of the photo and stated it is investigating the matter. In a statement, the IDF said the soldier’s conduct is “wholly inconsistent with the values expected of its troops” and has launched a military police probe.
The photo has sparked outrage across Lebanon, particularly among Christian communities, with officials describing it as a serious violation of religious sanctities. Social media users highlighted what they called Western silence on attacks against Christian and Muslim religious symbols by Israeli forces and settlers. Some conservative voices in the US, traditionally supportive of Israel, also expressed dismay.
The incident comes days after a fragile ceasefire took effect between Israel and Hezbollah on Friday, following months of intense fighting that began in March 2026. Israel maintains a presence in several areas of southern Lebanon despite the truce.
Lebanese leaders and rights groups have demanded accountability, viewing the act as part of a pattern of desecration reported in both Lebanon and Gaza. The Israeli military has not provided further details on the timing or specific circumstances.
