What was the matter?

President Draupadi Murmu had gone to North Bengal as the chief guest at the 9th International Santhal Conference. The program was originally scheduled to be held in Bidhannagar but the state administration changed the venue to Gosaipur at the last moment. The President said that the space in Bidhannagar was very big, 5 lakh people could have easily come there. But he was told that the space was narrow.

Expressing grief, the President said, ‘I feel very sad. Santhal people could not come to such a far place. It seems that the administration deliberately chose a place where Santhal people could not reach. Perhaps the hope was that no one would come and the President would go back.

He also said that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee or her ministers did not come to meet him, which is different from the normal protocol. The President recalled Mamata Banerjee calling her ‘Mamata didi’ and ‘younger sister’ and asked if she was angry with him.

Mamta Banerjee’s answer

Mamata Banerjee hit back at the President’s statement. He said, ‘Why doesn’t the President speak about atrocities against tribals? Why do they remain silent when this happens in Madhya Pradesh or Chhattisgarh? First do something there, then speak. He accused BJP of using the President to defame West Bengal. Mamta said, ‘Do not do politics on the advice of BJP during elections.’
