What happened during the budget session?

The political impasse touched new heights during the Budget session 2026, with the opposition launching a scathing attack on Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri's alleged links with the Jeffrey Epstein files. The issue caused huge uproar and adjournment in Parliament. In the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi had taken the names of Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri and industrialist Anil Ambani while mentioning the Jeffrey Epstein files during the budget debate. Rahul raised the question that if his name is in the files then why Anil Ambani was not jailed. The statement provoked opposition parties Congress, Trinamool Congress (TMC), and DMK, who raised loud slogans in the House demanding Puri's resignation. Due to this, the proceedings of Parliament had to be interrupted and adjourned several times. Hardeep Singh Puri clearly said in the press conference that he had met Epstein only 3-4 times, and that too as a member of the delegation of the International Peace Institute. He described his email conversation as part of India's promotional efforts and accused the opposition, especially Rahul Gandhi, of 'buffoonery'.
