Grand Rath Yatra will start from 16th July Jagannath Rath Yatra
Every year on the second day of Ashadha Shukla Paksha, a Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath, his elder brother Balabhadra and sister Subhadra is taken out from the Jagannath temple in Puri, Odisha. This year this journey will start from 16th July 2026. During this time, all three deities ride on grand chariots and go out for a tour of the city.
How did the tradition of incomplete statues begin?
According to mythological belief, King Indradyum of Malwa was a great devotee of Lord Vishnu. It is said that God appeared to him in his dream and ordered him to make a statue of his special form and build a grand temple.
The king obtained a divine wood from the sea, from which the idol of the Lord was to be made. But at that time no qualified craftsman was available. Then an old man himself came forward to make the idols. According to religious belief, he himself was Lord Vishwakarma.
21 day condition and idols remained incomplete Jagannath Rath Yatra
The old craftsman placed a condition before the king that while making the idols, no one would open the door of the room for 21 days. If this happens then he will leave the work (Jagannath Rath Yatra) incomplete. For a few days, the sound of labor kept coming from inside, but later suddenly everything became quiet. Worried King Indradyum opened the door of the chamber on the 15th day even before the 21 days were over.
Tradition created after Akashvani
On reaching inside the room, the king saw that the sculptor was not there and the statues of Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra were in an incomplete state. The king regretted his mistake very much.
Then there was a voice from the sky that due to premature opening of the doors, the statues remained incomplete, but this form is most dear to God (Jagannath Rath Yatra) and in Kaliyuga, he will be worshiped in this form. There is a religious belief that since then these incomplete statues are worshiped in the Jagannath temple and every year during the Rath Yatra, the Lord goes on a tour of the city.
