Jalandhar CP Suspends ACP, SHO After Back-to-Back Firing Incidents Target Doctors
Jalandhar, March 1, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)
Jalandhar Commissioner of Police Dhanpreet Kaur has suspended Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Parminder Singh Mand and Station House Officer (SHO) Inspector Ravinder Gauri following two consecutive firing incidents targeting doctors in the city within a span of 24 hours.
The disciplinary action comes in connection with the second incident that occurred in the posh Mota Singh Nagar locality and on charges of alleged dereliction of duty, after the incident raised serious concerns about law and order in the area.
ACP Parminder Singh Mand was overseeing the Model Town subdivision, while Inspector Ravinder Gauri was serving as SHO of Model Town Police Station at the time of the incidents.
The latest incident occurred on Saturday night around 9:45 PM in Mota Singh Nagar. An unidentified assailant, wearing a helmet, arrived on a motorcycle, parked near the residence of Dr. Vareesh Kumar, owner of Vardaan Medical Center (also referred to as Vardaan Hospital), and fired four rounds at the house before fleeing the scene on his bike.
Two of the bullets reportedly struck the gate of the residence.
It has been learned that the doctor had earlier informed police officials that he had received threat calls. However, the matter was allegedly not taken seriously at the time. The subsequent firing incident is now being seen as exposing negligence on the part of the concerned officials, which reportedly led to their suspension on charges of dereliction of duty.
CCTV footage of the incident has since gone viral on social media. The footage shows a lone attacker calmly arriving on a motorcycle, parking it nearby, and opening fire before escaping.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Manpreet Dhillon, who reached the spot soon after the incident, confirmed that an FIR had been registered and that an investigation was underway.
The Mota Singh Nagar locality falls under the jurisdiction of Model Town Police Station.
First Incident: Firing Outside Veterinary Doctor’s House
The incident in Mota Singh Nagar was the second such firing episode reported in Jalandhar within 24 hours.
Earlier on Saturday, seven to eight gunshots were fired outside the residence of a veterinary doctor in the Santokhpura locality of the city.
Unidentified assailants reportedly targeted the house and fled the spot. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in either incident.
The back-to-back shootings created panic among residents and heightened concerns over public safety.
Swift Administrative Action
Following the two incidents, Commissioner of Police Dhanpreet Kaur took swift administrative action by suspending the ACP and SHO concerned.
While the police have not officially elaborated on the specific lapses, the suspension signals accountability measures in response to the perceived failure to prevent or effectively respond to the incidents within their jurisdiction.
Police teams are currently examining CCTV footage, gathering forensic evidence, and working to identify and trace the assailants involved in both cases.
