James Cameron Answers What’s Next for Jake Sully

With Avatar: Fire and Ash nearing release, anticipation surrounding the film is at an all-time high. Fans of the franchise are also wondering what’s in store for Sam Worthington’s Jake Sully‘s future following Avatar 3. James Cameron has now addressed what lies ahead for the Human-turned-N’avi hero in a recent interview, ahead of the threequel’s release.

James Cameron talks Avatar 4 and answers Jake Sully’s future

While speaking to DeadlineJames Cameron was asked about Jake Sully’s story in Avatar 4 and 5. Neither Cameron nor Sam Worthington, who was also present for the interview, specified what would happen to Jake in those films. The pair instead offered vague responses. The former said, “Oh, it’s all written out. I mean, you got to think of it as almost adapting novels that already exist.”

He continued, “In my mind, that was the process. They were screenplays, but I wrote it in a very novelistic form.” Cameron stressed that he and the creatives knew Avatar: Fire and Ash would conclude the first story arc. He added, “And I think it’s important to tell an audience, ‘Okay, you’re not going to go off a cliff. Frodo’s not going to get in the boat and row away halfway to fricking Mordor.’ You know what I mean? It’s like, ‘No, this story lands. It ends,’ right?”

The Titanic filmmaker said that if he chose to do a fourth and fifth film, he knew what their stories would be. However, he did not reveal what those stories were, saying, “It’s hard for me to think about that right now.” He added, “I always use the metaphor that if a woman is in labor, at the moment she’s crowning, you don’t ask her about her next children.”

Meanwhile, Worthington said that Cameron told him Avatar’s story like a “novel storyteller.” He added that the filmmaker didn’t number each film and further stated that the franchise’s narrative was narrated like “an old campfire [tale].” Further, Worthington pointed out that people would ask him about sequels and stressed that Cameron didn’t approach his filmmaking in that regard, adding, “It’s a bigger picture that’s going on here.” He continued, “It’s not like the Lord of the Rings films. It’s like Tolkien. He’s writing it, like that. And that’s interesting, from my point of view.” Moreover, Cameron said in a recent Vanity Fair career retrospective video that Avatar 4 would have an eight-year time skip.

Avatar: Fire and Ash arrives in theaters on December 19, 2025.
