James Gunn reveals Superman’s opening scene and costume details

The filmmaker and co-head of DC Studios, James Gunn has given fans a glimpse into his upcoming film Superman. He revealed details about the film’s opening scene, its inspiration from the Tom Cruise starrer Top Gun: Maverickand the design of Superman’s suit.

“We took a lot from films like Top Gun: Maverick,” said Gunn. “We shoot a lot of our action with actual drones flying in and around Superman and the people that he’s flying with.”

Teasing how the film begins, Gunn stated, “Superman already exists. Lois and Clark already know each other. Lex hates Superman’s guts from the beginning. So we start right in the middle of the action.”

Gunn also shared insights into the design of Superman’s iconic costume.

“We were trying on all these different versions, and we screened tested with trunks and no trunks. David said that Superman wants kids to not be afraid of him. He wants people to like him. He wants to be a symbol of hope and positivity. So he dresses like a professional wrestler.”

Supermanstarring David Corenswet in the titular role, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, is set slated for a July 11, 2025, release in theatres. The film’s trailer will be out tomorrow.
