James Mangold, Coralie Fargeat and Jacques Audiard in Contention for Best Director

The Academy nominations for 2025 were announced on Thursday, with Emilia Perez and The Brutalist being top contenders in several categories.

The films are also in contention in the Directing category. Accordingly, Jacques Audiard (Emilia Perez), Brady Corbet (The Brutalist), Sean Baker (Aor), Coralie Fargeat (The Substance) and James Mangold (A Complete Unknown).

Though Emilia Perez (13 nominations) and The Substance (10 nominations) are viewed as favourites to win this category, James Mangold too looks poised to bag this coveted award honouring films globally. Mangold’s The Complete Unknown is running for eight categories: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Sound and Best Costume Design.

Mangold has won four Oscars before: Best Supporting Actress for Girl, Interrupted (1999); Best Actress for Walk The Line (2005); and Best Film Editing and Best Sound Editing for Ford v Ferrari (2019). However, the 61-year-old director is yet to win the award under the Directing category.

A Complete Unknown is an American musical biopic of Bob Dylan, directed by Mangold and co-wrote with Jay Cocks. The film, based on Elijah Wald’s 2015 book Dylan Goes Electric!documents the formative years of Dylan (played by Timothee Chalamet), where he tasted success in folk music space and was drawn into controversy for the usage of electric instruments. Chalamet too has been nominated under the Best Actor category.

The 97th Academy Awards will take place on March 2, 2025, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.
