According to historians, on 24 October 1947, the tribals started attacking the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir. After receiving information about this crisis, Brigadier Rajendra Singh tried to handle the situation by reaching Uri border of Kashmir with his army. At that time the tribes had already captured many areas including Gilgit and Baltistan. Many soldiers were martyred in the encounter, but Brigadier Rajendra Singh did not accept defeat. Despite being injured, he faced the enemies and became immortal in history with his sacrifice.

Role and contribution of Maharaja Hari Singh

Maharaja Hari Singh sought help from the Central Government to save the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir from tribal attacks. The government of that time placed the condition of giving help that the Maharaja would merge with India. With this merger on 26 October 1947, the Indian Army reached the border areas of the valley and controlled the situation, due to which Jammu and Kashmir became an integral part of India.

From political point of view, October 26 is a holiday as Merger Day. Along with this, as a result of the demand and struggle of the Dogras, now 23 October has also been declared a holiday on the birth anniversary of Maharaja Hari Singh. This shows that their contribution to society and politics is being recognised, which is important for the rich culture and history of Jammu and Kashmir.
