The wisdom of the security forces avoided huge losses – Obnews

In Jammu and Kashmir, security forces have successfully foiled several terrorist attempts to target people using Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) since January 1, 2026, thereby averting major tragic incidents in the last two months.

Terror groups planted IEDs at least six times targeting security convoys, especially on the Srinagar-Baramulla highway, but all were detected and neutralized. The most recent incident occurred on the night of February 19–20, 2026, when Rashtriya Rifles units of the Indian Army, with the help of a dog squad, discovered an IED wrapped in a polythene bag in a roadside ditch at Azad Ganj Janbajpora in Baramulla. The Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) destroyed it on the spot without causing any damage or loss, thereby averting an attack on a scheduled convoy.

On 18 February, at around 7 am, an IED hidden in a briefcase was spotted near Narbal on the same highway; He was surrounded, stopped traffic briefly, and was safely defused. Earlier, on February 11, an IED was destroyed in Sopore.

In January, recoveries included: in Takiya Tappar, Pattan on 20 January (roadside IED defused during routine checking); On January 15, a device weighing 3-4 kg was found in Kakora forest in Rajouri; And on January 4 (or early January), a 2 kg IED was dropped by a drone on the LoC in Keran sector.

These incidents reflect the terrorists’ focus on ambushing convoys using explosives hidden in bags or briefcases. In response, the Army has increased patrolling, intelligence-based operations and area occupation on key routes like Srinagar-Baramulla-Kupwara and Kashmir-Jammu Highway. The rapid BDS intervention has consistently neutralized the threats in controlled explosions that have caused no damage and reinforced effective counter-terrorism measures in the region.
