There is tremendous excitement among the fans about ‘Jana Nayagan’, which is said to be Thalapathy Vijay’s last film, but its release is stuck between the Censor Board (CBFC) and court proceedings.

Sudden stop after initial censor board approval

The film was first sent for censorship in December 2025. The Chennai regional office had decided to give it a U/A certificate with some cuts. The film was scheduled to release on January 9, 2026 (Pongal). However, at the last minute, the CBFC chairperson referred the film to the revising committee citing a complaint, delaying its release.

Two contradictory decisions of Madras High Court

On January 9, the single bench of the Madras High Court ruled in favor of the film makers and ordered the Censor Board to immediately issue the certificate. Later the same day (January 9), the division bench of the high court stayed the single bench order.

Supreme Court refused to interfere

The producers of the film (KVN Productions) appealed against this stay order in the Supreme Court. On Thursday, the Supreme Court refused to interfere in the matter, saying that since the matter was already in the High Court, the decision should be taken there. The court made it clear that it will not issue any hasty order regarding release.

When will ‘Jana Nayagan’ be released?

The release of the film now completely depends on the hearing to be held on January 20, 2026. This hearing will be conducted by the division bench of Madras High Court. The Supreme Court has requested the High Court to try to take a final decision on this appeal on January 20 itself.

If the High Court gives its verdict in favor of the film makers on January 20 and orders the Censor Board to issue the certificate, then the film can be released in the last week of January or early February. At present, the entire industry and Vijay’s fans are eagerly waiting for the hearing on January 20.
