Heavy next 24 hours! ‘Whiteout’ alert in northern parts of Japan, rail and air services halted due to snow storm
Japan Winter Emergency: Normal life was severely affected in northern parts of Japan on Wednesday due to a severe snow storm, strong winds and extreme cold. The greatest impact was seen in Hokkaido and the coastal areas adjacent to the Sea of Japan, where rail and air services are continuously being disrupted.
According to Japan Railway Company JR Hokkaido, about 50 train services have had to be suspended since Tuesday due to strong winds, blowing snow and extreme cold. The speed of trains has been slowed down on many routes, while some services have been stopped completely.
The situation at the airport is even more serious
At the same time, the situation at New Chitose Airport remains even more serious. So far, 82 flights have been canceled due to bad weather, while many international and domestic flights are being delayed by hours. Passengers have to wait for a long time at the airport.
Authorities have warned that whiteout-like conditions with visibility reduced to almost zero and heavy snow accumulation could continue till early Thursday. Due to this, there is a possibility that the transport system will be further affected.
Situation is very bad even in sea areas
According to weather forecasting agencies, strong winds up to 35 meters per second may blow in the southern coastal areas of the Sea of Japan by Thursday. At the same time, the wind speed in the North Japan Sea area and the Pacific coast is expected to reach 30 meters per second. The situation in maritime areas also remains very bad.
There is a possibility of snowfall of up to 40 cm in the northern and southern areas adjacent to the Sea of Japan in the next 24 hours, which may make the situation more challenging.
Warning issued for 10 days
Meanwhile, China’s National Meteorological Observatory has also issued a warning for the coming 10 days. It is estimated that many parts of Inner Mongolia and Northeast China may see a sharp drop in temperature, snowfall and strong winds.
According to China’s National Meteorological Center, the temperature in the affected areas may remain 2 to 5 degrees Celsius below normal. Apart from this, there has also been a warning of sand storms in Inner Mongolia and Gansu province.

Weather experts have advised farmers in northern China to adopt special measures to protect wheat crops. It is also recommended to strengthen greenhouses and animal shelters in advance, so that damage caused by severe cold can be reduced.
