Japan to play Brazil in World Cup knockouts after 1-1 draw with Sweden
The result confirmed Japan’s place in the Round of 32 as Group F runners-up, while Sweden progressed as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams. The Netherlands topped the group after defeating Tunisia and will face Morocco in the knockout stage, while Japan will take on Brazil.
Neither side showed much urgency in a cautious opening half, with both teams aware that the standings elsewhere could shape their knockout paths.
Sweden created the first clear chance when Alexander Bernhardsson fired straight at goalkeeper Zion Suzuki in the sixth minute. Japan gradually grew into the contest, with Daizen Maeda heading wide from a cross before Keito Nakamura and Yukinari Sugawara tested goalkeeper Jacob Widell Zetterstrom without success.
The match was briefly interrupted by a cooling break as temperatures in Arlington reached 33 degrees Celsius, while defender Isak Hien became Sweden’s first booked player after bringing down Ayase Ueda to stop a promising counterattack.
The teams went into halftime goalless as the Netherlands held a 2-0 lead over Tunisia in the other Group F fixture.
Japan emerged with greater attacking intent after the restart and broke the deadlock in the 57th minute. Ritsu Doan split Sweden’s defense with a perfectly weighted through ball, sending Maeda clear to finish calmly past Zetterstrom for his first goal of the tournament.
The lead lasted only four minutes.
Elanga produced the equalizer with an outstanding curling effort from a tight angle on the right flank that caught Suzuki off guard and flew into the far corner, bringing Sweden level at 1-1.
The goal shifted momentum back toward Sweden, while Japan introduced Junya Ito and Koki Ogawa in search of a winner. Ogawa came closest in the 83rd minute but volleyed over the bar from Daichi Kamada’s inviting cross.
Sweden nearly snatched victory in stoppage time when Alexander Isak met a cross with a close-range header, but Suzuki reacted brilliantly to tip the effort onto the crossbar.
The draw proved enough for both teams to continue their World Cup campaigns.
