New Delhi: On Friday (15 May 2026) evening, strong earthquake tremors were felt on the eastern coast of Honshu island of Japan. Train services were briefly halted in the Tohoku region due to the tremors and emergency alerts were issued. It is a matter of relief that there is no danger of tsunami. There has been no news of any injury or major damage so far.

Let us tell you that according to the American Geological Survey USGS, the intensity of the earthquake was 6.7. Its epicenter was at shallow depth under the sea, about 49 km east-southeast of Ofunato city in Iwate Prefecture. The tremors occurred at 8:22 pm in Japan i.e. at 4:52 pm in India. Japan Meteorological Agency rated its intensity as 6.3 on its scale.

Strong tremors of ‘Lower 5’ intensity hit the cities of Tome, Osaki and Ishinomaki in Miyagi Prefecture. Tremors of magnitude 4 were recorded in many areas of Miyagi and neighboring Iwate. Emergency alerts were issued immediately after the earthquake, but it was later clarified that there would be no tsunami. The administration has asked people to remain calm and be prepared for aftershocks.
Train services affected
JR East halted Tohoku Shinkansen bullet trains between Tokyo and Shin-Aomori as a precaution after the tremors. Later services started gradually. However, some routes of the Yamagata Shinkansen are still closed for investigation.

Then tsunami alerts and warnings of increased seismic activity were issued. Small earthquakes of magnitude 5.0 and 4.7 also occurred off the east coast of Honshu this month.
