Japan’s ‘Human Fridge’ could be the future of ‘Summer Tourism’; would you step into a refrigerator while travelling?

Recently we read stories on how scorching summers forced several famous attractions to alter their afternoon sightseeing slots. Japan too is struggling with the summer heat. To battle the extreme temperatures, the innovative country has come up with a very interesting and cold solution.Now, Japan has taken that idea one step further.Welcome inside the “human refrigerator” A Japanese firm has introduced what is being called a “human refrigerator”. It is a walk-in personal cooling booth designed to rapidly lower body temperature after prolonged sun exposure. At first glance, it looks like a device out of a sci-fi movie. But given the increasingly frequent summer days above 40°C and heatstroke cases, the invention is a practical answer to the situation.Officially it is called the Do Hiemon Box which is created by Japanese refrigeration company SDRS. Standing around 2.1 metres tall, it resembles an oversized stainless-steel vending machine.How it worksWell a person irritated by the outside heat can simply get inside the chamber, sit down and chill (like literally!). They can spend about 10 minutes inside the booth which maintains an internal temperature of around 15°C. The air instantly cools down the body. As per the manufacturer, this helps reduce body temperature much faster than standing in front of a fan or even an AC.Why Japan needs itJapan’s summers have become harsh.The country has witnessed repeated heatwaves over recent years, with temperatures crossing 40°C in several regions. In 2026, the Japan Meteorological Agency even introduced the term “extreme heat day” for forecasts of 40°C or higher.What it means for travellersFor travellers planning a summer trip to Japan, the idea raises an interesting question: Could these human refrigerators or cooling booths soon become as common as water fountains and public toilets at major tourist destinations?Also summer is the season for Japan’s biggest experiences which includes fireworks festivals, mountain hikes and many cultural events. Visitors can spend hours walking through temple complexes in Kyoto, waiting in line. Extended exposure to intense heat can quickly lead to dehydration and heat stroke. And this is where the chamber comes into the scene.At present, the Do Hiemon Box isn’t aimed at tourists.It is currently being used at construction sites, warehouses and factories for workers.The booth reportedly costs around 1.5 million yen (approximately ₹8.8–9 lakh). The best part is that operating costs are surprisingly low, making it cheaper to run.
