Javed Akhtar criticizes ‘Border 2’ songs, calls for original music

Before the release of Border 2the sequel to the 1997 film Borderthe song from the new film received reaction online. The movie featured reworked versions of original tracks like Where will you come from? and Aye Jate Hue Lamhonwhich drew mixed responses from fans.

Speaking to India Todayscreenwriter and lyricist Javed Akhtar revealed that he had been approached by the makers of Border 2 but refused to contribute.

“They did ask me to write for the film, but I refused. I feel this shows creative bankruptcy. You have old songs that worked well, and now you want to reuse them with minor changes. Make new songs or accept that you cannot match the original work,” Akhtar said.

“Whatever is gone, let it stay gone. Earlier films like Haqeeqat (1964) had brilliant songs such as ‘Kar Chale Hum Fida’ and ‘Main Yeh Sochkar Uske Dar Se Utha Tha,’ yet we did not reuse them. We created new music, and people liked it. If you are making a sequel, create original songs instead of relying on past hits,” the Deewar writer added.

Akhtar also commented on the general trend of recreating old songs, noting, “Filmmakers often use nostalgia to attract audiences. My point is simple, if you want nostalgia, create new nostalgia. Do not just copy the old work.”

Border 2 is directed by Anurag Singh and by T-Series and JP Dutta’s J P Films and is set to hit theatres on January 23, 2026.
