Jennifer Lopez’s former publicist Rob Shuter is set to lift the curtain on his years in Hollywood with a new book that draws heavily from real-life experiences.
Shuter who has worked with major names including Jessica Simpson, Jon Bon Jovi and Alicia Keys will release his debut novel It Started with a Whisper on April 21.
While the book is presented as fiction Shuter has made it clear that much of the story is inspired by his own time working behind the scenes with A-list clients.
The plot follows four gossip reporters hosting a morning show, loosely based on his VH1 series The Gossip Table, which ran for two years.
Speaking about the project Shuter said the idea came from revisiting personal diaries he kept during that time.
He described them as filled with “funny, crazy, cruel, happy and upsetting” moments that eventually shaped the book.
Having worked closely with high-profile stars Shuter witnessed some of Hollywood’s most talked-about relationships and controversies including the on-and-off dynamic between Lopez and Ben Affleck.
He also reflected on the challenges of working as a publicist describing the role as emotionally demanding.
“You’re a therapist, a best friend, and everything in between” he said adding that while he has fond memories but the job itself could be difficult.
Though the novel avoids naming real individuals Shuter hinted that readers will likely recognise familiar personalities behind the fictional characters setting expectations for a book that could spark plenty of conversation.
