Jerusalem under threat? Iran allegedly planning surprise drone and missile strike during US negotiations

New Delhi: Amid continuing indirect negotiations between the United States and Iran over a potential nuclear agreement, fresh intelligence assessments have raised concerns that Tehran may be preparing a surprise missile and drone attack targeting Jerusalem as well as several Gulf nations.

According to some reports, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz and senior military officials reviewed security scenarios in which Iran could launch a pre-emptive strike. The discussion reportedly comes at a time of heightened regional uncertainty and ongoing diplomatic engagement between Washington and Tehran.

Ongoing US–Iran Nuclear Negotiations

The United States and Iran are currently engaged in indirect talks aimed at reaching a long-term nuclear arrangement. both sides are exchanging draft proposals while attempting to avoid a renewed military confrontation. However, major differences persist, particularly over Iran’s nuclear program and the future status of the Strait of Hormuz.

The negotiations remain indirect, reflecting deep mistrust between the two countries despite continued diplomatic messaging.

Uranium Stockpile at the Center of Dispute

A key sticking point in the talks is Iran’s stockpile of highly enriched uranium. Reports suggest Iran possesses uranium enriched up to around 60 per cent, close to weapons-grade levels, which requires 90 per cent enrichment.

The United States has repeatedly demanded that Iran transfer its enriched uranium stockpile abroad. However, Tehran has rejected this condition, insisting it will not relinquish its materials. US President Donald Trump has also reiterated that Washington will not allow Iran to retain uranium capable of supporting weapons development.

Rising Tensions in West Asia

The broader West Asia conflict has intensified following a cycle of strikes and counter-strikes between Iran and a US–Israel alignment earlier in the year. Iranian retaliation reportedly targeted infrastructure and energy facilities across Gulf nations, further escalating tensions.

Iran has also been linked to disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global energy route handling nearly one-fifth of global oil trade, contributing to volatility in international fuel markets.

Security Concerns Mount

With negotiations still underway and no final agreement in sight, regional security remains fragile. Intelligence warnings about possible missile and drone activity have further heightened concerns, as diplomatic efforts continue alongside military preparedness across the region.
