Jhansi Medical College Fire Accident: Safety audit in February and mock drill in June, government! Whose fault is there in the accident?

Jhansi Medical College Fire Accident: Fire Safety Audit was conducted in Jhansi Medical College in February and mock drill was conducted in June. The death of 10 infants in Jhansi Medical College has shocked the entire country. This has raised a big question on the hospital which claims to provide world class best treatment to infants. UP Deputy CM Brajesh Pathak, who reached the spot, said that a fire safety audit was conducted in February. A mock drill was also conducted in June. How and why this incident happened, can anything be said about it only after the investigation report comes?

In a report published by a news channel in January this year, it was written that babies suffering from serious medical problems would get the best treatment in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of Jhansi Medical College. This ward has been equipped with modern facilities and equipment. It was told that a new NICU ward of 51 beds is being built in Jhansi Medical College. More than 70 percent work of this ward has been completed. This work is expected to be completed by the end of February. This ward is being built at a cost of more than Rs 70 lakh.

NICU ward nodal officer and pediatrician Dr. Om Shankar Chaurasia had said that after the construction of the new NICU ward, sick children will be able to get treatment with modern medical machines at one place. He had told that arrangements have also been made to keep children and mothers together. Chaurasia said that there will be all the facilities like infusion pump, multipara patient monitor, ventilator, auto C-PAP, LED photo therapy, ultrasound, echo etc. But the reality is that the fire incident in the NICU took the lives of 10 infants and many others who suffered burn injuries. This has increased widespread concern. UP CM has taken cognizance of the unfortunate incident and an inquiry has been ordered.

District Chief Medical Superintendent, Sachin Mahor, said that 54 children were admitted in the NICU ward. Suddenly a fire broke out inside the oxygen concentrator. Efforts were made to extinguish the fire but since the room was highly oxygenated, the fire spread rapidly. Many infants were saved. 10 children have died and the injured children are undergoing treatment. According to officials, prima facie the cause of the fire is being said to be short circuit. Officials said the fire started inside an oxygen concentrator and that the room was highly oxygenated, which helped spread the fire.

How long will this tradition of fooling the public in the name of providing “world class” facilities continue?

Let us tell you that there were big talks about building a “new NICU ward” of 51 beds in the Medical College of Jhansi. Another cosmetic structure is being built in the name of providing world class facilities. In such propaganda, reality is often buried beneath the glitter of glitz. An attempt is being made to reassure the public by saying that 70 percent of the work has been completed. But the reality is that most of the “incomplete projects” remain completed only on paper. In the name of “hi-fi” facilities like Kangaroo Mother Care Room, parents will be expected to bring their newborn baby here in the illusion of better treatment.

It has often been seen that after such announcements, wards are built, but neither the doctors are there nor the necessary machines work. In sensitive places like NICU, without trained staff and maintenance, all the facilities prove to be mere lip service.

Will the same happen this time also? How long will this tradition of fooling the public by calling it “world class” continue? The real question is whether the government will ensure permanent solutions and transparency for these wards? Hopefully this time we will see real change, not show-off. Otherwise, only newborn babies and their parents will remain trapped in this web of false propaganda and unfulfilled promises.
