Jharkhand Chilka Roti: Every state of India has its own special traditional dish, which becomes the identity of its culture and food. One such popular and traditional dish of Jharkhand is Chikha Roti, which is also called Chilka Roti in many places. This roti prepared from rice and gram dal is rich in taste as well as nutrition. Its soft, spongy and light texture makes it different from other rotis.

What is Chikha (Chilka) Roti?

Chikha Roti is a traditional dish made in rural areas of Jharkhand. It is mainly prepared from a mixture of rice and gram dal. It looks like dosa, but its texture and taste are quite different from it. The special thing about this roti is its soft and spongy texture. This is why it is preferred as breakfast, lunch or light dinner in villages.

Both rice and pulses are major food items in Jharkhand. In such a situation, the local people mixed these two and prepared a dish which is delicious as well as full of nutrition. Ingredients to make Chikha Roti

1½ cups rice
¾ cup chana dal
1 teaspoon cumin
2 teaspoon oil
salt as per taste

How to make Chikha Roti

Soak Rice and Dal

First of all, wash rice and gram dal thoroughly. After this, soak them in enough water for 6 to 8 hours or overnight.

In the morning, drain off the excess water and put the rice and pulses in the mixer and grind them with the help of less water. The batter should be slightly thicker than the dosa batter.

make light by whipping

Take out the solution in a big vessel. Add salt and cumin to it. Now beat the mixture well for a few minutes so that air is filled in it. This will make the roti more soft and spongy.

cook on pan

Heat the pan on medium flame and apply light oil. Now add one ladle of batter and spread it in a round shape like dosa.

cook on both sides

Drizzle some oil on the sides and cook for about 2 minutes. When the bottom side turns golden, turn it over and cook the other side also for 1-2 minutes.

serve hot

Serve ready Chikha Roti with Aloo Chokha, Tomato Chokha, Coriander Chutney or Dal.
