Political turmoil has intensified in Jharkhand regarding the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections 2026. Ahead of the elections for two seats in the state, differences have emerged between the ruling alliance Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and Congress regarding seat sharing.
Ranchi: Political activity has intensified regarding the elections for two Rajya Sabha seats in Jharkhand. There are reports of differences and strategic tussle over candidates between Jharkhand Mukti Morcha and Congress, which are part of the ruling alliance, while all the parties are busy finalizing their preparations.
Meanwhile, activism has also increased from the BJP side and on the instructions of the party’s national leadership, efforts to strengthen the strategy in Jharkhand have started. Amidst the political turmoil, BJP leader Nitin Naveen is reaching Ranchi on a two-day visit to Jharkhand, where he will meet with party workers and discuss the upcoming election strategy.
Congress announced its candidate, political heat increased
Congress has announced the name of Pranab Jha as its candidate for the Rajya Sabha elections. The party has staked claim on one seat citing its numerical strength. Congress has 16 MLAs in the Jharkhand Assembly and on this basis the party has demanded a Rajya Sabha seat in the alliance. JMM, the other major party of the alliance, has also said that it will contest elections on two seats. However, the right to select the candidates and the final decision has been given to Chief Minister Hemant Soren.
According to sources, efforts are also being made by Congress to persuade Hemant Soren, so that a consensus can be reached on seat sharing and unity is maintained in the alliance.
Congress strategy: Focus on organization and unity
Congress has intensified its preparations for the Rajya Sabha elections. The party leadership has started a series of meetings to keep its MLAs united. After the approval of Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, the party appointed two senior leaders—

Has been appointed observer for Jharkhand. These leaders have been given the responsibility to ensure unity of Congress MLAs in the state and strengthen the election strategy.
Congress trusts 16 MLAs
Congress has 16 MLAs in the 81-member Jharkhand Assembly. This number remains the basis for the party to claim the Rajya Sabha seat. Congress says that it should get one seat under the coalition dharma. Under this strategy, the party has also announced its candidate. Jharkhand Mukti Morcha’s central spokesperson Supriyo Bhattacharya has said that the party has so far had “one-sided cooperation” with the Congress and JMM holds both the Rajya Sabha seats.
BJP’s activism also increased
Amidst this political turmoil, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has also intensified its activities. BJP National President Nitin Naveen is reaching Ranchi from Saturday on a two-day tour of Jharkhand. During this tour, he will take part in many important meetings, the aim of which is to strengthen the party organization and prepare strategies for the upcoming political situations.
