Jhumka Gira! Reputed US firm calls Indian earrings ‘vintage’, sparks controversy
‘Jhumka Gira Re’… who hasn’t heard this song? The appeal of Jhumka or Jhola Dul to the young women of this country for decades is still undiminished. But the famous American brand wanted to shake off the Jhumka as ‘vintage’! Models walked in Paris Fashion Week with precisely those jhumkas hanging from their ears. But did not get recognition. Famous fashion house Ralph Lauren did not mention India and South Asia! About which the debate is raging.
This is not the first time. Earlier there were allegations of misappropriation of Kolhapuri slippers. Even after models walked around wearing chattis exactly like the Kolhapuri, it was not acknowledged that the shoes were made in India. Now Jhumka. It is said to be ‘vintage’. But where is the vintage, where is the source, everything is avoided. And the noise is because of this.
Many models were seen walking in Paris fashion shows, whose earrings are exactly our native Jhumkas. Jhumka paired with jacket, blazer has caught the attention of fashion conscious people. Is that pendant ‘vintage’? Seeing that, the net world is laughing. A netizen wrote, “This pendant is available for fifty taka.” Another wrote, “I mean stealing.”

It is good to say that this brand is named after the famous fashion designer Ralph Lauren. He designed Priyanka Chopra’s wedding dress. He even designed Priyanka’s outfit at the Met Gala. The question is how did such a famous person do such a thing. He can be inspired by anything. But it is a serious injustice to present and not recognize precisely that, a large part of the informed circles think.

Ralph, however, opened his mouth in defense. He claims that this incident has been designed in a very basic way. Which belongs to their ‘Authentic Makers’ and ‘Artist in Residence’ programs. But no links to India or South Asia have been found to mention him.
