New war breaks out between Jio-Airtel, dispute over 5G spectrum increases, India’s internet future may change

Jio Vs Airtel: A new dispute has arisen between the country’s two big telecom companies Jio and Airtel. Let us tell you that the matter is related to 5G spectrum of 26GHz band, regarding which both the companies have completely different opinions. In this, Reliance Jio says that the spectrum should be used for WiFi based broadband services. Airtel has strongly opposed it. This controversy has created a new challenge not only for the telecom industry but also for the government.

For information, let us tell you that in the year 2022, telecom companies had spent about Rs 15 thousand crores and purchased spectrum of 26GHz band. Now the question is whether this high-frequency band should be used for WiFi internet in addition to traditional 5G services.

Jio’s plan: Preparation to provide cheap and fast internet

It is being reported that Jio had written a letter to the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) last year seeking approval to use 26GHz spectrum to provide WiFi based broadband services to homes and corporate customers. Regarding which the company argued that this will reduce the need for laying fiber cable or installing additional mobile towers and high-speed internet can be made available to more people at a lower cost. In such a situation, it is being said that if this scheme is successful then internet connectivity in rural and remote areas can also get a big benefit.

Why did Airtel object?

In this case, Airtel says that any new technology used in the 26GHz band must be in accordance with global 3GPP standards. Due to which the company fears that the introduction of high-power WiFi system may affect the signals of the existing 5G network. Not only this, Airtel has also expressed concern that due to this, users may have to face more radiation. Besides, the operation of satellite internet services like Starlink and OneWeb will also be affected.

The government is conducting a thorough investigation

Let us tell you that for now the government has not given any final decision on this proposal. Telecom sector body TSDSI is preparing rules for the use of WiFi technology in this band. Apart from this, it is also being decided what power limit should be fixed so that problems like radiation and signal interference can be reduced.

India can make a new record

In such a situation, it is being said that if Jio’s proposal is approved then India can become the first country in the world which will use the 5G spectrum allotted for mobile services for WiFi based internet services. But for now, WiFi in the country mainly operates on the 2.4GHz, 5GHz and lower 6GHz bands.
