Jobs in Germany: Berlin to offer 90,000 skilled visas for Indians each year

New Delhi: Germany, which is facing an acute workforce shortage, is planning to increase the number of skilled labour visas it grants to Indian professionals. Berlin is contemplating raising the annual cap on skilled labour visas for Indian professionals from 20,000 to 90,000 annually.

The German Economic Institute has stated that Germany is facing a huge problem of 570,000 unfilled job vacancies. The country’s new visa policy is being viewed as an important step in attracting talent from other countries to tackle labour shortages.

Germany, which has pioneered in engineering and healthcare services, is dependent on talented workforce from other countries to maintain its strong economy and uphold industry standards. The country’s IT sector is said to be under pressure as its domestic technology firms are struggling to meet the demands of digitalisation amid a lack of talent.

“One thing which is also very important for our strategic partnership is the skilled labour migration to Germany. We need skilled workers in many areas, from IT engineers to bus drivers and caregivers,” Philipp Ackermann, German Ambassador to India, said in an interview with LiveMint.
