Joel Embiid says he deserves All-Star nod
Joel Embiid finds himself in a complicated but compelling position as the All-Star conversation takes shape. As Keith Pompey of The Philadelphia Inquirer notes, availability is the obvious hurdle.
Embiid has appeared in just 19 of the Philadelphia 76ers’ 37 games, and he was sidelined again Sunday for left knee injury management along with left groin soreness.
When he has been on the floor, however, the big man’s impact has been difficult to ignore.
He is averaging 23.5 points per game, the highest scoring mark among Eastern Conference centers, reinforcing the idea that his effectiveness hasn’t waned even as his minutes have been carefully monitored.
After Friday’s game, Embiid didn’t shy away from addressing the topic directly.
“Am I going to make it? I think I should,” he said.
He suggested that his case hasn’t been emphasized strongly enough, adding, “I don’t think we’re pushing it enough. I think I got pretty good stats.”
Embiid then delivered his message with a smile and a nudge to those covering the league.
“So, maybe you guys should put the word out that Joel Embiid is back,” he said.
The center has played 10 seasons for the 76ers. He has averaged 27.5 points, 10.9 rebounds, and 3.7 assists in 471 regular-season games.
He was selected to play in 7 All-Star games, and has won 1 MVP award.
