Johnson lambasts Sam Konstas for enabling India and Bumrah’s ‘two against 11’ mindset | Read

Former Australian fast bowler Mitchell Johnson has strongly criticized young cricketer Sam Konstas for his actions during the recent Sydney Test against India.

Johnson believes Konstas’ attempt to provoke Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah backfired, leading to a significant setback for the Australian team.

The incident occurred on the first day of the Test match when Konstas, positioned at the non-striker’s end, engaged in a verbal exchange with Bumrah. The Indian bowler, known for his fiery temperament, responded by dismissing Usman Khawaja on the very next delivery. This dismissal triggered a heated confrontation, with the entire Indian team rallying around Bumrah.

Johnson, writing in his column for The Nightly, expressed his disappointment with Konstas’ actions, stating that the young player showed inexperience by involving himself in a situation he should have avoided. “Konstas’ inexperience was evident when he inserted himself into a situation he probably shouldn’t have. Khawaja, being an experienced player, knows how to manage such moments, and the teenager should have left it to him,” Johnson wrote.

The former pacer emphasized that engaging in banter with a bowler like Bumrah requires intense focus and timing, as any lapse could lead to a dismissal. Johnson added, “At that late stage of the day, there could only be one winner. Konstas picked the wrong moment, and it cost Australia dearly”.

Despite Australia’s 3-1 victory in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, the altercation between Konstas and Bumrah has sparked discussions about the psychological aspects of the game and the importance of experience in handling high-pressure situations.

As the cricketing world continues to debate the incident, it serves as a reminder of the fine line between competitive spirit and strategic missteps on the field.
