JPC formed on One Nation-One Election Bill, 39 MPs including Anurag-Priyanka in the committee, 12 MPs from Rajya Sabha

JPC On One Nation-One Election: JPC has been formed in Rajya Sabha on Friday on One Nation-One Election. JPC has been approved by voice vote in Rajya Sabha. 39 MPs including 12 Rajya Sabha MPs have been included in the Joint Committee of Parliament. The joint committee includes 16 MPs from BJP and 5 from Congress.

The One Nation-One Election Bill, which provides for simultaneous holding of parliamentary and assembly elections in the country, has been approved by voice vote in the Rajya Sabha. The proposal to nominate 12 members of the Upper House in the committee to be formed to consider another bill related to One Country-One Election has been approved. There will be a total of 39 members in this joint committee.

Earlier, Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal referred the 129th Amendment Bill, 2024 and the related Union Territory Laws Amendment Bill, 2024, which provides for simultaneous holding of Lower House (LS) Lok Sabha and Assembly elections, to the Joint Committee of Parliament. It was proposed to be sent for consideration.

From the House side, this committee includes Rajya Sabha MPs Ghanshyam Tiwari of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Bhuneshwar Kalita, K Laxman, Kavita Patidar, Sanjay Jha of Janata Dal (United), Randeep Singh Surjewala of Congress, and Mukul Wasnik of Trinamool Congress. Saket Gokhale, P Wilson from Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, Sanjay Singh from AAP, Manas Ranjan Mangaraj from Biju Janata Dal. And V Vijay Sai Reddy from YSR Congress Party has been included.

Dharmendra Yadav and Chhote Lal from Samajwadi Party, Kalyan Banerjee from Trinamool Congress, TM Selvaganapathy from DMK, Harish Balayogi from Telugu Desam Party, Anil Desai from Shiv Sena (Ubatha), Supriya Sule from Nationalist Congress Party (SP), Shrikant Shinde from Shiv Sena, Shambhavi from Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), K from Marxist Communist Party. Radhakrishnan, Chandan Chauhan of Rashtriya Lok Dal and Balashouri Vallabhaneni of Jana Sena Party will be part of this committee. Those from Bharatiya Janata Party include PP Choudhary, CM Ramesh, Bansuri Swaraj, Purushottam Rupala, Anurag Thakur, Vishnu Dayal Sharma, Bhartrihari Mahtab, Sambit Patra, Anil Baluni, Vishnu Dutt Sharma, Baijant Panda and Sanjay Jaiswal.

The bill was presented in the House on 17 December

The bill related to One-Country One Election was introduced on December 17 in the ongoing winter session of Parliament. After division of votes in the House, the 129th Constitution Amendment Bill 2024 was reintroduced. 263 votes were cast in favor of introducing the bill, while 198 votes were cast against it. Opposition parties had protested against this amendment and demanded to send it to JPC. PM Modi had also agreed to send this bill to JPC. After discussion in the House, JPC has been formed on this bill.

BJP has the highest number of members in JPC

BJP is the largest party in the house. In such a situation, a total of 16 MPs of Bharatiya Janata Party, 12 from Lok Sabha and 4 from Rajya Sabha, have been included in JPC. At the same time, a total of 5 members of Congress Party, 2 from Rajya Sabha and 3 from Lok Sabha, have been made part of the committee.
