Jon Hamm Gives Definitive Answer on Returning for a Potential Mad Men Reboot
Mad Men star Jon Hamm has opened up about whether or not he is keen on revisiting his iconic role of Don Draper, while reflecting on the show’s complete and satisfying ending.
‘I’ve aged out of playing Don,’ says Mad Men’s Jon Hamm
Hamm addressed the Mad Men reboot chatter during a recent interview with Extra TV and didn’t leave much room for doubt. When asked if the reboot will happen, he said, “Oh god. I don’t know. If they do it, it certainly won’t be with me. I think I’ve aged out of playing Don.” The actor, now 55, believes stepping back into Don Draper’s shoes would not feel right at this stage.
He also explained why revisiting the story could do more harm than good. Hamm praised how the series wrapped up its seven-season run, saying it gave proper closure to key characters like Peggy, Pete, Betty, and Roger. “I was very pleased with how the show ended… I’d hate to open that box back up and ruin it,” he said, stressing that the narrative already feels complete.
This isn’t a new stance. In an earlier THR roundtable, Hamm shared a similar view, noting that the creative team had already told the full story. “There’s no story to tell. We ran out of story,” he said, adding that the ending felt “satisfying” both for him and the audience. He made it clear he prefers to leave the legacy untouched (via Collider).
Even so, Hamm hasn’t completely moved on from the show. He recently revealed he has been rewatching it with his wife, Anna Osceola. Looking back, in a conversation with EThe described the experience as “very wild,” since the series premiered nearly two decades ago when he was much younger. He admitted it feels like a time capsule, but also said, “It’s a pretty good show… it’s been really fun” revisiting it.
While some cast members may remain open to returning, Hamm’s stance seems firm. For him, the story of Don Draper has already reached its natural conclusion, and that’s exactly how it should stay.
