JPC Waqf Bill Meeting TMC Kalyan Banerjee suspended smashes glass bottle News in Hindi: A very dramatic incident took place on Tuesday in the meeting of the Joint Parliamentary Committee considering the Waqf Amendment Bill when Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee smashed a glass bottle with water. He broke it and threw it towards committee chairperson Jagdambika Pal, after which he was suspended from the committee meeting for a day.

During a heated argument with Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Abhijit Gangopadhyay, Banerjee got angry and broke a bottle and threw it.

Committee president Jagdambika Pal condemned Banerjee's conduct and said that God should give her wisdom. He said, “He had crossed all limits, crossed all decorum… He has been expelled from the next meeting of the committee.”

Pal said that immediately after this incident, he informed Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla over phone.

He said, “I have been in parliamentary life for four decades. Never seen anything like this. Someone brought a revolver tomorrow. I am hurt by such incidents. The committee has taken the decision (to suspend) with a very heavy heart.

While breaking the bottle and throwing it, Banerjee got injured on her thumb and pinky (smallest finger) due to which she had to be given first aid.

He was later seen being taken back to the meeting room by AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi and Aam Aadmi Party leader Sanjay Singh.

The officials also offered soup to the TMC member. Pal said the committee voted 9-8 on BJP MP Nishikant Dubey's proposal to suspend Banerjee for a day.

After the meeting ended, Banerjee refused to talk to journalists about the incident.

The committee was hearing the views of two organizations from Odisha, comprising retired judges and lawyers, when opposition members questioned what they had to do with the bill.

A BJP member said Banerjee was the first to speak and the Speaker even allowed her to make some interventions. When he asked for a chance to speak once again, Pal refused. After this a heated argument started between Banerjee and Gangopadhyay. Gangopadhyay had objected to the repeated disruptions.

The Waqf (Amendment) Bill was sent to a joint committee of Parliament soon after it was introduced in the Lok Sabha in the monsoon session.(pti)
