JSW Patents Chery Releases L6 In India

Patent details of another Chery model have now surfaced online. This time, the Lepas L6 urban SUV has been patented in India, indicating a possible market launch in the near future. This model is likely to be sold as a JSW product here. Chery is parent to several sub-brands like Jetourm, iCAUR, Omoda, FULWIN, and Lepas. Lepas, in fact, is a brand that targets a younger crowd.

Lepas L6 Patent Filed: JSW’s Product Offensive Gets Wider!

Lepas is a relatively new brand that made its global debut in April 2025. With its design and positioning, it sits above the Tiggo lineup in Chery’s global portfolio. Globally, Lepas has announced three models- L4, L6 and L8, out of which the L6 is a mid-range urban SUV.

The patent images show the front three quarter view of the L6’s design. We can see the futuristic front fascia of the vehicle. It will have sleek DRLs and a large grille.

Minor changes can be seen in the detailing. When launched here, this model will have a JSW top hat. Days ago, design patents of the Chery Tiggo 8 Leopard had surfaced, giving us all an unexpected surprise. The Tiggo 8 Leopard was, till recently, kept exclusive to the Chinese market.

Additionally, patents for the Arrizo 8, Jetour T2 i-DM PHEV, Tiggo 8, T1TP concept, a luxury MPV, and the iCAUR V23 have also been registered in India. All these suggest that JSW is preparing a comprehensive product offensive for the Indian market, and is very serious about scaling success with its independent passenger vehicles vertical. It should also be mentioned here that a patent filing doesn’t guarantee a market launch. But what if it actually happens?

Lepas L6: What Do We Know About It?

past l6

Lepas, as a brand, has a strong focus on modern design and technology. The L6 is one of its key products. It has not officially launched globally yet, it is expected to be introduced in markets like Malaysia, Indonesia, and Africa sometime soon.

The L6 targets young urban professionals. The company even describes this product as a “mobile workstation for creators”! This also highlights the focus on connected car technology and experiences inside.

The exterior styling has Chery’s ‘Leopard Aesthetics’ as its base. The vehicle gets sleek, rounded body surfaces, narrow LED DRLs inspired by a leopard’s eyes, rounded grille with spiderweb design, aerodynamic panels, smooth surfaces, and more. The silhouette closely resembles that of the Tiggo range.

The cabin is based on the ‘ third living space’ theme. The dashboard will likely have a minimalist design. Expect to find large screens inside with premium two-tone upholstery for the seats and ambient lighting. The company will equip the L6 with advanced connected car functions as well.

Expected Platform And Powertrain Options

The Lepas L6 will be based on Chery’s T1X platform (or its derivative). This architecture supports multiple powertrains, and is quite versatile. If launched in India, the L6 could offer three powertrain choices.

It will likely have a petrol version that uses a 1.6-litre turbocharged engine producing around 197 hp and 310 Nm. This will likely be borrowed from the Tiggo 8 Leopard. A seven-speed dual-clutch transmission or a CVT could be offered along with the manual.

There will be a hybrid variant as well. It will use the CSH (Chery Super Hybrid) system that combines a 1.5-litre petrol engine with an electric motor delivering a combined output of 221 hp and 390 Nm. This setup will likely come with a 3DHT dedicated hybrid transmission, similar to the one used in the Jetour T2.

Finally, there will be an all-electric version too. It is likely to feature a 207 hp electric motor and a 61 kWh battery pack. This setup is expected to deliver a range of around 461 km on the NEDC cycle. Interestingly, a similar setup will be seen on the Jaecoo J5.
