‘Judging a player like Shubhman Gill in 2-3 matches…’ Gujarat Titans coach gave a befitting reply to the critics.
Ashish Nehra On Shubman Gill’s Critics: Indian Test and ODI team captain Shubman Gill is struggling with his poor form these days. Gill is continuously flopping in T20 International and has been able to score only 4 runs in the first two matches of the T20 series against South Africa. This poor performance of Gill before the T20 World Cup 2026 has increased the concern of the team as well as the fans.
He has been facing continuous criticism on social media. Meanwhile, Ashish Nehra, head coach of Gill’s IPL team Gujarat Titans, has given a big statement on the criticism regarding Gill’s form.
Ashish Nehra takes a dig at Gill’s critics
Former Indian cricketer and Gujarat Titans head coach Ashish Nehra has defended Shubman Gill despite his poor performance. Nehra has expressed displeasure over the hasty comments being made about his captain’s form. Nehra says that in a format with ups and downs like T20, passing judgment on a player after watching just two matches is becoming a wrong and worrying habit.
Gill recently returned to the T20 team in the Asia Cup as vice-captain. In T20I, he has scored only 181 runs in the last 10 matches and the strike rate has also been less than 140. But Nehra does not consider this to be a big concern.
No worries about Gill’s current form
When coach Nehra, who has watched Gill closely for the last two IPL seasons, was asked whether he was worried about Gill’s current form, especially when there are three months left in the IPL. Nehra said laughingly, “Leave aside three months, even if the IPL had been held after three weeks, I would not have been worried. Nothing is decided by two matches in the T20 format.” He said that Gill has played only two matches against South Africa.
Nehra clearly said that the biggest problem in India is to judge a player only on the basis of his statistics. He said, “This is our problem. In this format, if you start judging a player like Shubman Gill only after two-three bad matches, then it will be difficult.”

‘Get Washington Sundar to open…’
Nehra further said humorously that if people want change, then there is no dearth of options. He said, “Remove Abhishek Sharma and Shubman Gill, make Sai Sudarshan and Ruturaj Gaikwad open. If you have to remove them too, then make Washington Sundar and Ishan Kishan open. So there are a lot of options. If you lose one or two matches or the statistics of any batsman or bowler are not good and you talk about replacing them, then it will be difficult.”
