‘Justice for daughters, SC status for Nishads…’, Sanjay Nishad will make it difficult for BJP

Nishad Party, an ally of the ruling NDA alliance in Uttar Pradesh, is now making a different political move in the state. Sanjay Nishad, sometimes cries for the daughters of the society, sometimes demands justice for the alleged oppression done by the Samajwadi Party government. He also praises Chief Minister Yogi and also expresses that things are not going well for the Nishads. From Gorakhpur to Meerut, he is holding road shows and public meetings one after the other.

Now Nishad Party chief Sanjay Nishad is demanding Scheduled Caste status for Nishads. He has even said that if the government does not give Scheduled Caste (SC) status to the Nishad community instead of Other Backward Class (OBC) before the assembly elections next year, then it will declare the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as the enemy of the Nishad caste. About two weeks ago, he had cried in a public meeting and claimed that Nishads were being oppressed.

Sanjay Nishad, Fisheries Minister in the Yogi Adityanath government, while talking to reporters on Saturday, said that he has already termed Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), Samajwadi Party (SP) and Congress as ‘anti-Nishad’. These parties never respected the communities dependent on rivers and streams.

Sanjay Nishad said that the condition of Nishad community is worse than that of Scheduled Castes, but in Uttar Pradesh they have been kept in OBC. Sanjay Nishad claimed that the population of Nishad community in Uttar Pradesh is 9 percent, although in government figures it is said to be only a little more than 2 percent. He said that earlier we were fighting for respect. Now Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath respect us by calling us ‘Nishad ji’.

Sanjay Nishad said, ‘Now we want security, which the government is trying for. The third need is prosperity, which can be fulfilled only by getting SC reservation. With this we will get jobs, we will be able to contest from SC seats in Panchayat and Assembly elections and the community will be able to progress.

Sanjay Nishad is repeatedly showing that Nishad is a big political force in the state, who cannot be ignored. This statement of Nishad Party is increasing political stir before the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.

How big a power is Nishad?

There are many sub-castes of Nishad community in the politics of Uttar Pradesh. Castes like Mallah, Kevat, Bind, Kashyap come under Nishad. This influential vote bank, which has dominance in the districts of Purvanchal and Central Uttar Pradesh. If this society increases pressure on the Yogi government due to the demands of Sanjay Nishad and the demands are not met, then BJP may suffer losses.

Nishad Party has its hold in districts like Gorakhpur, Sant Kabirnagar, Maharajganj, Deoria, Kushinagar, Mau, Jaunpur, Ghazipur, Ballia, Varanasi, Prayagraj and Mirzapur. Political analysts say that Nishad voters play a decisive role in about 60 to 70 assembly seats of the state. Out of these, the population of this community is so high in about 20-25 seats that they directly decide the victory or defeat. Sanjay Nishad is a well-known leader of this community.
