Justice Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta directed the Center to participate in CCTV standardization meeting in police stations.

Regarding the quality and monitoring system of CCTV systems in police stations across the country. Supreme Court Has adopted a strict stance (Supreme Court CCTV Police Stations). A bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta on Thursday directed the Central government and other concerned parties to compulsorily attend the proposed meeting for standardization of CCTV equipment and creation of centralized dashboard.

During the hearing, senior advocate Siddharth Dave, appointed as amicus curiae, told the court that as per the previous order, a meeting was organized on the subject on February 21, 2026, but representatives of the Central Government, Delhi Government and some states did not attend the meeting. Due to this, a detailed report in this regard could not be presented in the court.

On this, the Supreme Court clarified that participation of all parties is necessary on this important subject. The court directed to hold a meeting on the new date suggested by the Amicus Curiae (Supreme Court CCTV Police Stations) on March 14, 2026 and said that all concerned parties should participate in it and ensure necessary progress. The next hearing of this case has been scheduled for March 23, 2026.

This matter came to light when concern was raised over the lack of functional CCTV cameras in many police stations of the country. Taking cognizance of a media report that came out in this regard, the Supreme Court had directed to file a suo motu PIL. The court believes that effective installation of CCTV cameras in police stations is extremely important for transparency, accountability and protection of human rights.

Standardization of CCTV equipment and creation of centralized monitoring system is expected to increase transparency in police functioning and help in providing evidence during any type of complaint or investigation (Supreme Court CCTV Police Stations). This instruction of the Supreme Court is being considered an important step towards police reform and strengthening the surveillance system.
