Kaif expressed protest: Hardik should not be treated the same way as Rohit was treated.
New Delhi. The captaincy of Mumbai Indians for IPL 2026 is in the hands of Hardik Pandya. However, recently the discussions of making Suryakumar Yadav the captain, who performed brilliantly in the T20 World Cup, made headlines. Former Indian players Krishnamachari Srikkanth and Ravichandran Ashwin had talked about giving captaincy to Suryakumar. His argument was that Hardik Pandya has not been able to perform as expected as captain in the last two seasons and now Suryakumar should get a chance. Ashwin said on his YouTube channel that the leadership of Mumbai Indians should now be in the hands of Suryakumar Yadav.
Need to learn lessons from past experiences
Amidst these discussions, former Indian batsman and fielding expert Mohammad Kaif opposed this and advised the team to exercise caution. Kaif says that Mumbai Indians should not take captaincy decision in haste. He clarified that what happened with Rohit Sharma should not happen with Hardik. According to Kaif, doing so increases instability in the team and affects performance. He appealed to the franchise to remain patient, citing Hardik Pandya’s experience in taking the team to Qualifier 2 last season and making progress in leadership.
Trust in Hardik’s captaincy
“Mumbai Indians should not repeat the same mistake that happened with Rohit Sharma. Hardik Pandya is now getting comfortable in his role and played Qualifier 2 last year. His contribution as captain has been positive,” Kaif said. He also pointed out that constantly chasing new options in the team can lead to instability again and again. Suryakumar Yadav is definitely a great option, but Hardik should not be treated hastily like what happened with Rohit.
Stability and forward perspective in the team
Kaif clarified that Hardik Pandya has proved his captaincy ability by making Gujarat the champion, hence Mumbai Indians should now maintain stability under his leadership. He urged the team management to give Hardik full opportunity before looking at any new option next year. He said that only by maintaining balance and patience in the team’s decisions, the player’s confidence and the team’s performance will improve.
Start of IPL 2026
Mumbai Indians will start their campaign against Kolkata Knight Riders at their home ground on March 29. All cricket lovers will carefully watch the impact of the captaincy controversy on the performance of this match and the upcoming season. Mohammad Kaif believes that giving time to Hardik Pandya and avoiding constantly changing decisions will maintain the team’s strategy and stability.
