Legacy of Gussadi Dance: Kanaka Raju

Kanaka Raju, who passed away at the age of 84 due to illness in his hometown of Marlavai, was a prominent figure in the Gussadi dance community. In 2021, he was honored with the Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian award, for his remarkable contributions to this traditional dance form. His passion for dance left an indelible mark on cultural heritage.

Teaching and Inspiration

As the chief dance master at the School of Gussadi in Adilabad, Raju dedicated his life to teaching the dance form to eager learners. His journey into Gussadi dance began at the tender age of eight, fueled by the unwavering support of IAS officer Madavi Tukaram, who recognized his talent early on.

A Life of Achievement

Raju’s illustrious career included a memorable performance before former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1982. He also assisted Professor Christoph von Fürer-Haimendorf in studying the lifestyle and culture of Adivasis in Adilabad from 1945 to 1956. His contributions have been celebrated, and he was awarded ₹1 crore by former Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao for his dedication to preserving this art.

A Fond Farewell

Kanaka Raju is survived by his wife, eight daughters, & four sons. Family members have announced that his final rites will be performed according to the traditions of ethnic tribes in Marlavai. The cultural community mourns the loss of a true icon whose legacy will continue to inspire future generations.
