According to the production house, Kanguva grossed a strong Rs 58.62 crore worldwide on its first day, with the poster celebrating the achievement, stating, “Like a wild storm in the box offices worldwide. However, Sacnilk.com reported slightly lower numbers, estimating the film’s Day 1 gross at Rs 40 crore, with Rs 28.5 crore coming from domestic earnings in India and Rs 11.5 crore from international markets. This still represents a solid start, especially considering the film’s release on a weekday (Thursday).
Producer KE Gnanavel Raja had expressed his lofty ambitions for the film, initially stating that he dreamed of Kanguva reaching Rs 2000 crore worldwide. During a press conference, Gnanavel acknowledged the mixed response but remained optimistic, saying, “I expected the film to make a lot more on its opening day, but whatever we have gotten is still phenomenal. The film performed well despite releasing on a Thursday, and I expect it to become Suriya’s highest-grossing film by Monday.”
Mixed Reviews for Kankuva
While Kanguva garnered attention for its star-studded cast and grand scale, the reviews have been a mixed bag. Hindustan Times noted, “Suriya is the heart and soul of Kanguva, but the film by Siva just doesn’t do justice to his performance and commitment.” The review criticized the film’s execution, stating that it fell short of meeting the high expectations set by its long production period and ambitious premise.
Fans also had a divided opinion. While Suriya’s performance was widely praised, many expressed dissatisfaction with the film’s loud sound mix and criticized Siva’s writing and direction. Despite this, the film has managed to stir interest, particularly with its cameo by Karthi and its ending, which hints at a sequel, Kanguva 2. The teaser for the follow-up promises an exciting face-off between Suriya and his brother Karthi, adding to the anticipation for the next installment.
Will there be a sudden surge over the weekend?
While Kanguva has made an impressive start, it remains to be seen whether the film can maintain its momentum over the weekend, especially as the reviews continue to roll in. With its massive global reach and the promise of a sequel, the film still holds the potential to become one of Suriya’s highest-grossing films, depending on how it performs in the coming days.
