Captain Subhash Rai’s unbeaten half-century (59 runs, 34 balls, two sixes, six fours) and his unbroken half-century partnership with Rajkumar (11 not out) proved to be decisive for the defending runners-up Vidya Bhaskar XI, who, after a thrilling struggle, defeated the former champion Paradkar XI by five wickets with four balls to spare in the inaugural match of the 38th Kanishka Dev Gorawala Media Cricket Competition here on Wednesday.

On the first day of the competition organized under the banner of Varanasi Press Club run by Kashi Journalist Association, Paradkar XI, who came to bat first at Dr. Sampurnanand Sports Complex, got the support of opener Prashant Mohan’s strong half-century innings (91 not out, 76 balls, one six, 13 fours), which made a strong score of 157 runs for 2 wickets in 20 overs. In reply, Vidya Bhaskar XI scored 158 runs for five wickets in 19.2 overs.

Paradkar XI did not have a good start and Abhishek Singh (1-24) lost the first wicket in the third over at a total of five. But Prashant Mohan took charge and along with Surendra Tiwari (37 runs, 39 balls, four fours) made a century partnership of 135 runs on the second wicket and took the XI beyond 150.

However, the opening batsmen of Vidya Bhaskar XI failed to play big innings and the bowlers led by Dhawal Chaurasia (3-34) lost five wickets in the 13th over. Among these, Omprakash Singh (20 runs, 27 balls, two fours), Abhishek Singh (18 runs, 12 balls, three fours), Subroto Mukherjee (12 runs, 14 balls, one four) and Vinay Shankar (10 runs, 16 balls, one four) reached double figures.

But at the time of need, Subhash thwarted the efforts of Prashant Mohan with his unbeaten fifty and ensured his team’s victory with a partnership of 65 runs with Rajkumar for the sixth wicket.
