Kapil Sibal’s big blast: ‘How can I tell what is in Mamata Banerjee’s mind?’
The country’s veteran lawyer and Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal has broken his silence on the election results of West Bengal and the political situation arising after it. Sibal said that in a democracy, elections come and go and victory and defeat are part of the game, but the most important thing is that the Constitution and democracy of our country should not be defeated. Taking a jibe at the results, he said that the statement ‘Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar’ is correct, but how that victory was achieved and what were the conspiracies behind it, is a big question in itself.
Countered Prime Minister Modi’s ‘change’ statement
Kapil Sibal directly targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi and reminded him of his old statements. He said, “When BJP won in Bengal, the Prime Minister had said that we adopt the policy of change, not revenge. It sounds very good, but I want to ask the Prime Minister, what policy has he actually adopted since 2014?” Sibal alleged that the central government created power in its favor by breaking the majority governments. He asked whether toppling elected governments is the politics of ‘change’ or of ‘revenge’?
Questions raised on use of ED and siege of Chief Ministers
Sibal did not stop here, he also strongly attacked the alleged misuse of central agencies. He said that the way ED was used against opposition chief ministers, was it politics to change the country? According to Sibal, this may be a change done to grab power, but it has nothing to do with the development or real change of the country. His statement has sparked a new debate in political circles.
Sibal was blunt on the question of Mamata Banerjee’s resignation.
When Kapil Sibal was asked a question on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s statement of not resigning, he replied in a very measured manner. He clearly refused to comment on this. Sibal said, “How can I say anything on what is going on in a person’s mind? It would not be right for me to say anything on this matter.” He also mentioned that there are reports in the media and social media that Mamata has withdrawn her statement, hence this question should be asked to her only.
What did you say about hypothetical questions and legal options?
When journalists tried to corner Sibal and ask what could be the legal options in the current situation, he replied in his usual style. “I am not going to answer any question that is completely hypothetical,” he said. It is clear from his stance that at present he is in no mood to get into legal complications on this sensitive issue. Meanwhile, BJP leaders, elated with the victory in Bengal, offered prayers at the Kali temple in Delhi and claimed to form a ‘good governance’ government in the state.
